Practices of Avalokitesvara: recitation of the Buddha-name and the Six Syllable Mantra

Reciting the name of Bodhisattva Avalokitesvara or the Six Syllable Mantra is also a method of Avalokitesvara's practice.

The purpose of sutra recitation and mantra chanting

There are two functions of reciting the sutras and mantras. It helps us to self-reflect whether our acts are in accord with the sutras. It is also a meditation practice.

Reciting the Buddha's name verbally or mindfully?

To derive true benefit from reciting the Buddha's name, we should do it mindfully rather than just pronouncing it absent-mindedly. Our concentration will increase with practice until we achieve samadhi.

What's the meaning of saying "Amituofo"?

"Amituofo", the name of Amitabha Buddha in Chinese, is also a greeting word of Chinese Buddhists. The practice is attributable to Chan master Yongming Yanshou (904-975), who recited Amitabha Buddha's name all the time — even when talking to people, he still mentally recited the Buddha's name. "Amituofo" is a very useful Buddhist expression, good for all occasions. Constant recitation brings us inner peace and joy, keeps us mindful of our conduct, and benefits others in the same way.

The merits of reciting sutras

Reciting sutras benefits oneself and one's family and represents spreading the teachings of the Buddhadharma. It can also benefit other sentient beings who are hearing the recitation. Its ultimate purpose is that we observe the teachings of the sutra and act accordingly.

What is the significance of reciting the Buddha's name?

We'll be free from fear in danger or in difficulties if we're mindful of one of the six meritorious things. Reciting the Buddha's name leads to a peaceful, virtuous life and rebirth in the pure land.
