Chan and Pure Land are the two most widely followed and practiced schools in contemporary Chinese Buddhism. Compared to the Pure Land school, Chan is more focused on practice and direct actualization of the teachings. Philosophical explanations are not emphasized. Therefore, it is easy to wrongly conclude that Chan practice lacks a theoretical foundation and a systematic approach. These four Dharma talks are based on the teachings of several sutras, as well as the records and commentaries of the Patriarchs. The talks begin with a discussion of the underlying principles of Dependent Origination in order to explain Chan teachings and provide a systematic approach to practice. We hope these talks will serve as a guide to correct practice and understanding of Chinese Chan.
