Q&A about Mantra Recitation: Q4: How can reciting mantras eliminate karmic obstacles and prevent disasters?

A4: Some people believe that reciting mantras to eliminate disasters is contrary to Buddhist concept of cause and effect. In fact, when we recite the mantra, we keep our minds pure and focused, which has the same effect as keeping the precepts to reduce the chances of committing wrongdoings, developing our wholesome roots, and transforming our minds. If we persevere and treat each mantra recitation as a sincere evocation and devotional prayer, the combined effects of both the mantra and our focused minds will correspond with the power of the Buddhas and Bodhisattvas' fundamental vows. The Buddhas and bodhisattvas, in turn, will safeguard us in our practice and help us go through life's difficulties and obstacles.

Furthermore, although karmic retribution resulting from serious wrongdoings is not easy to change, sincere repentance can sometimes lighten the retribution of a serious misdeed due to the influence of new conditions on existing causes and effects. It is analogous to a time bomb: if someone knows how to defuse the bomb, a crisis can be averted. Therefore, fixed karma is not necessarily unchangeable.
