What Introductory Practices are Available for Working People?

It is better to conduct regular practices with fixed contents and duration. If we are too busy to set specific practice periods we can conduct our practice based on a fixed number of times, such as recitation of Buddha's name or a mantra.

Beginners can make a vow and set a goal first. For example, they can recite the Great Compassion Mantra 21 times or the name of Guanyin Bodhisattva 3000 times per day. We can practice reciting whole-heartedly during our spare time when we are riding the metro-train, walking, waiting in line, etc.

We can carry a counter or a mala bead when reciting. On the one hand, this helps us to count the number of of recitations and accumulate confidence. On the other hand, it is used to remind and encourage us to finish the practice as best we can for that day. It is not necessary for beginners to have too much pressure, but to practice with perseverance, starting with a few methods and gradually adding more over time.

If it is still difficult to sustain a practice of reciting sutras and mantras, you can try the Morning Ten-recollection Method, an expedient method created by Tzu-yun Tsun-shih of the Song Dynasty. It is easy, time-saving, helpful in focusing minds, and is thus considered the best way for working people.

1) After freshening up in the morning, prostrate three times and join palms, while keeping your upper body straight.

2) Inhale and start reciting the Buddha's name until you have fully exhaled ; this marks one recitation. Repeat this process ten times to complete the practice.

3) After ten recitations, recite the Transfer of Merit and prostrate three times to conclude the Ten-recitation Method.
