There are many forms of Buddhist meditation. This retreat will focus on the basics of pure Chan Meditation as taught by Master Sheng Yen and presented by his Western Dharma Heir Gilbert Gutierrez.

While the title indicates basics, the true Chan basics for beginners of the Chan practice, as espoused by the ancient Chan Masters, is quite profound. This class is suitable for practitioners of all experiences.

Gilbert will cover the various Chan Meditation methods. He will also present how to utilize the Mind to sit properly. This was said by one ancient Chan Master as "turning the Mind's eye inward."

Gilbert's style blends practice with the principles. You will learn not only how to sit but why Chan meditation methods work. The retreat will follow the traditional Chan schedule, starting early in the morning and making the most efficient use of time in concentrated group practice. The retreat includes daily lectures, meditation sessions, and personal interviews as time permits. Participants should be mentally and physically prepared for the rigors of such regimen. Therefore, attendees will be asked to meet the following requirements:
  • Already received basic meditation instructions
  • Previously attended one-day retreat(s) or equivalent experience
  • Commit to the entire length of retreat
  • Stay overnight 6/28 to 7/1 at the center
  • Sleep on floors with own sleeping gears, due to the facility's space limitation

This precious in-person opportunity to learn from Gilbert is truly a treasure. Seating is limited – do register now!
