Weekend Retreat

Event Description
This in-person weekend retreat has a simple and relaxed schedule that allows you to settle your mind while at the same time allowing you to maintain a constant awareness of your every activity.

Each day will consist of (5 – 7) thirty minute periods of sittings interspersed with guided gentle yoga and walking meditations. The retreat also offers a review of basic meditation methods (such as awareness of the breath), introductory guidance in the method of Silent Illumination, and brief Dharma talks.


Requirements to Attend
Have experience with meditation and ideally have a routine meditation practice.
Have attended a formal meditation class or attended a 1-day retreat

Pricing
This event is priced on a sliding scale. Please consider your registration as a moment to practice generosity by paying at the highest rate that you can afford. Your generosity supports Dharma Drum Retreat Center, staff, your fellow practitioners, and our continued efforts to help people to learn and grow. Any amount paid above the Base rate is a tax-deductible donation to DDRC. Please contact us if you need the tax receipt.

No one will be turned away for lack of funds.


Chartered Shuttle
We are happy to offer a chartered shuttle service from Manhattan Penn Station to our center, provided we have enough interested participants. The fee for the shuttle service is $75 for one way and $150 for a round trip per person.

The shuttle will depart from Manhattan Penn Station at 2:00 pm on the start day of the retreat, taking you directly to our center. On the end day of the retreat, the return shuttle will depart from our center at 4:30 pm, heading back to Manhattan Penn Station.

Teacher
David Listen

David has been sharing Chan/Zen meditation and Buddhist teachings for over 15 years, leading intensive meditation retreats, classes, and activities at various monasteries, college campuses, and private institutions throughout North America, Europe, and East Asia. Previously known as Venerable Chang Wen (常聞法師), he was one of the few Western monastic disciples of Chan Master Sheng Yen. He had been a monk for over a decade, and has since returned to lay life to share the insights of the Buddha in his own creative way. David is fluent in Mandarin Chinese, and has done extensive work translating the teachings of Chinese Buddhism into English, both on retreat and in published works. He holds a Bachelor’s degree in Environmental Studies, a Master’s degree in Mental Health Counseling, and is currently a counselor at a clinic for people suffering from severe mental illness. He also has his own life mentoring/coaching practice, guiding people in their cultivation of wisdom and compassion on an individual basis.
