Concerned with the future of Buddhism and Buddhist education, Chan Master Sheng Yen founded DDM by integrating the efforts of many people in 1989. The Center was inaugurated on 21 October 2005. Situated in an area resembling the shape of a drum lying on its side, DDM was named after an analogy in the Lotus Sutra “beating the large Dharma Drum” in the hope that by beating the mind-purifying Dharma drum, people may obtain peace and harmony.

DDM aims to care for humanity, purify the mind with the Dharma, and eliminate conflicts and barriers through global interaction, dialogue, and collaboration, so as to achieve a pure land by protecting the spiritual environment.

Main Entrance (Sanmen)

Usually referred to as "sanmen" (Three Gates of Liberation) in Mandarin in Chinese, the main entrance of a monastery symbolizes the Buddhist concept of the three liberations: emptiness, marklessness, and wishlessness.

Inscribed on an andesite rock, the emblem was inspired by the Vitarka Mudra (hand gesture of teaching) of the Buddha turning the Dharma Wheel.

The design reflects a concept in the Diamond Sutra - "Abiding nowhere, the mind manifast" - and the Chan School's emphasis on simplicity and moderation.   

Welcoming Guanyin Park

Welcoming Guanyin Park

The Welcoming Guanyin is the first holy statue you see when entering the DDM World Center for Buddhist Education. 
Its prototype is a creation of Master Sheng Yen. Many times in deep meditation he saw the Bodhisattva coming from the sky to welcome him.

Lotus Bell Park

Lotus Bell Park

The largest of its kind in the world, designed in Tang style, conveying elegance and simplicity, the bell was cast with inscriptions of the entire Lotus Sutra and Great Compassion Mantra totaling 70,152 characters, and a painting inspired by the Lotus Sutra, entitled "Two Buddhas Sitting in the Many Jeweled Pagoda".

Building I located in the center of the Dharma Drum World Center for Buddhist Education, 
also the center of all buddhist practices.   The overall appearance of the building is simple, open, with a calm black and blue tone.

Eyes downcast and head slightly tilted, the Bodhisattva hears the sound of the Dharma from the Grand Buddha Hall and prayers of sentient beings. 

Founding Guanyin Park

Master Sheng Yen named it "Founding Guanyin" to commemorate the fact that this holy statue witness the difficult process of founding and constructing Dharma Drum Mountain. 

 

Seven Tathagatas

Seven Tathagatas

We call these seven old banyan ficuses "Seven Tathagata"; some have described the relationship between Master Sheng Yen and them as "an old man and seven trees."

The Library and Information Center of the Dharma Drum Institute of Liberal Arts (DILA) is a research library specializing in Buddhist studies. The Chung-Hwa Institute for Buddhist Studies (CHIBS) was established in 1985 by Venerable Master Sheng Yen.  In 2001, the CHIBS he moved to the DDM World Center for Buddhist Education, located in Jinshan District, Taiwan.

Medicine Buddha Statue

The Medicine Buddha statue was carved in the style of Yungang Stong Cave of the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and donated to Dharma Drum Mountain by an anonymous supporter. This statue is located near the bank of Caoyuan Creek at the DDM World Center for Buddhist Education.

"A Spiritual Mountain and Sublime Environment" Made of shale rock from Hualian, Taiwan, 36 tones in weight and five meters in height.

Eco-Friendly Memorial Garden

The design of the Life Memorial Garden is bright and minimalist. There are no tomb stones or worshiping rites and despite being a burial site, the Gardens do not elicit the conventional feelings of gloom associated with traditional cemeteries.
