- The three levels of compassion
- Levels to benefiting others
- Benefiting others is benefiting ourselves collective karma
- How to cultivate compassion to become wisely compassionate?
- While we care for others, how should we protect ourselves from hurt?

Appropriate Ways of Giving

Through the action of giving we foster our compassion and generosity, which will help us reduce our attachment and clinging to the self, and reduce the greed, craving, and desire of the self. Though the merit of giving may be subjective, we should do an investigation and contribute to credible people and organizations, or to those who are truly sincere and deserve our support.

Levels to benefiting others

It only requires a smile or a look to make people joyful and feel warm inside.

Benefiting others is benefiting ourselves collective karma

Consider others and avoid creating bad joint karma so we can have a better future.

How to cultivate compassion to become wisely compassionate

Compassion is both nature and nurture. We are all born with some degree of compassion, which should be tempered with reason, and nurtured like a seedling so it won't wither. And it will grow if we practice by looking inward, and reducing our vexations.

While we care for others, how should we protect ourselves from hurt

We should care for others according to our ability only, so we can avoid burdening ourselves instead.

What’s the best way to repay kindness?

If we are able to survive, live in peace and free from disturbance, and follow and practice the Dharma well, we should be thankful to the many people who help and support us. That is why Buddhism teaches us to repay four types of kindnesses: the kindness of parents, the kindness of the Three Jewels, the kindness of one’s country, and the kindness of other sentient beings. Some people also count the kindness of teachers.

Benefit others and in turn you benefit yourself

Giving and receiving must be mutual, which are what hold society together and what make the society and the world we live in have warmth and hope. Although we may not be able to repay kindness to the person who has helped us, as long as we harbor gratitude and thankfulness, and pray for the happiness of our benefactors, or in turn try our best to use what we have, our knowledge and abilities, to help others and contribute to society, that is also repaying kindness.

Feeling grateful and feeling thankful
