Recorded Saying

A genre of Chinese literature in which the verbal teachings, or often just pithy statements from the teachings, of a teacher are recorded. The expression yuˇlù was coined by Chán 禪 Buddhists but works of famous teachers that are written in a similar style appeared as early as the Analects of Confucius. (Also translated “discourse records.”)
