Chan Meditation Center English Sunday Dharma Talk - Reflecting the Diamond Sutra -3 Talk By Gilbert Gutierrez

The material presented here is deep and potentially confounding.  However, Gilbert presents it in a way that is clear and deeply human.  His presentation encourages us to delve into the mystery and investigate it for ourselves, becoming inspired by the complexity as opposed to intimidated by it.  He begins the lecture by discussing and clarifying Emptiness as a foundation for the Diamond Sutra.  He describes how we should approach studying Emptiness and how we can understand it in our daily life.
At around the 53:00 minute mark, Gilbert begins reading the first paragraph of the Diamond Sutra.  He elucidates the profound wisdom in easily overlooked sections.  For example, as the sutra describes the Buddha adjusting his robe, placing his bowl, and sitting on the cushion, Gilbert describes this as, “the Buddha is being the Buddha”.   That in being calm, present and acting with clarity, we can find the Buddha in the present moment. No task is too menial or banal for the Buddha to be present.  This is something I would have overlooked in reading the Sutra, but as Gilbert presented it, I found it to be very profound and pointed to immense dignity with which we could live our lives—we only have to choose to!
