Chan Meditation Center English Sunday Dharma Talk - Chan 101-1 by Gilbert Gutierrez
This lecture by Gilbert Gutierrez is the first in a series of five, which provides a synopsis on meditation suitable for both beginners and more advanced Chan practitioners.
Gilbert stresses how Right View in practice--Pratītyasamutpāda (causes and conditions never fail)--is absolutely critical. He explains that appearances in meditation are there precisely because we put them there. In meditation, we should thus focus on contemplating the method to “stop mind that desires continuations.” Meditating properly is like using a broom the right way to sweep away one’s emotional attachment to appearances.
Gilbert reminds us of the importance of practicing meditation without expectation or fear. If one practices with the expectation of reaching enlightenment, one is bound to fail, because one is full of the sense of self and desire. Fear refers to transitioning into the non-saṃsāric side--fear of losing control of the impermanent self-ego.
I sense a great sincerity and urgency each time I hear Gilbert give a lecture. Gilbert shoulders the responsibility as Master Sheng-yen’s dharma heir. This, to me, is what motivates him, selflessly and tirelessly, to share his experience with all who want to learn--for which I am most grateful.
