Brightening Up the Mind, Opening up the Heart; the Benefits of Being a Volunteer with Compassion

At the heart of this ideal is the compassionate effort by its volunteers to offer help in various ways, from providing emergency relief in both care and resources to offering hope and comfort to disadvantaged people.

Secretary General of the DDMSWCF, Venerable Guo Qi likened volunteers working at the DDM to Bodhisattvas, whose hearts are filled with deep compassion for all living beings. They serve and contribute selflessly and tirelessly wherever they are needed. As the late Venerable Master Sheng Yen had taught, a peaceful mind comes to those who serve others altruistically.

Wen-Jie Chen, who has been a DDM volunteer for over 20 years, said that being a volunteer has enabled him to build up a huge network of friends, uplift and enrich one’s self character, and become a model to encourage others towards goodness and the need to help others who are worse off than oneself.

He added that serving as a volunteer has also made him see the nature of impermanence, which has prompted him to make up his mind to resolutely practice the teachings of the Master on a daily basis and strive diligently and unconditionally to help all those who are in need.
