Investigating Koans 7-night Residential Retreat

Time: Saturday 7th April to Saturday 14th April 2018

Leader: Fiona Nuttall,
Venue: Maenllwyd Retreat Centre, Wales UK

The ancient Chinese Zen practices of investigating Huatou and Gongan (Koan) are best practised in a supportive environment such as this intensive silent retreat.

As one becomes deeply absorbed in the practice, mental constructions drop away and one is confronted by a realisation that one does not know the nature of existence and one's fundamental assumptions of life are groundless.

Staying with and cultivating this 'doubt', it can become all-consuming 'Great doubt' which may 'shatter', giving a direct insight into reality which may be what is known as an Enlightenment experience.

To progress in these methods requires a sustained focus and so this retreat is recommended particularly for those with previous experience of intensive retreat, and prior attendance at a Western Zen Retreat is advisable, but serious beginners are also accepted.

The Vimalakirti Sutra is the one of the most profound and insightful sutras
that expounds how lay practitioners can cultivate the Bodhisattva Path. In
this lecture, Guo Gu will talk about the core teaching and its application in
our daily life.

Guest speaker: Guo Gu (Dr. Jimmy Yu)
Founder of Tallahassee Chan Center
Associate Professor at Florida State University
Although the methods of meditation are simple and straightforward, it is best to practice them under the guidance of a teacher. Without a teacher, a meditator will not be able to correct beginner’s mistakes, which if uncorrected, could lead to problems or lack of useful results.

In our weekend meditation class, you will learn the fundamentals of sitting meditation, including proper bodily posture (sitting on a cushion or a chair), relaxation, and basic methods of concentration. In addition, you’ll learn about the proper environment, equipment, and timing, as well as self-massage and important concepts related to the process of meditation. Explanations about various experiences and obstacles in meditation will also be given.

The format of the class allows you to immerse yourself in the training, over two nights and two days. Your grasp of the methods will improve with each sitting, reinforced by group practice with like-minded students. You will return home motivated and equipped to cultivate your personal daily practice.
