This 4-part Beginner’s Meditation Workshop is perhaps the most systematic and thorough introduction to the practice of Buddhist meditation available anywhere, benefiting practitioners of all levels.

It covers the prerequisite conditions when preparing for meditation, proper sitting postures, techniques for relaxation, and basic methods of concentration. Plus other supporting techniques to regulate the body, mind, and spirit such as self-massage, yoga exercises, and daily mindfulness techniques.

In this workshop you will not only learn sitting meditation but also breathing, walking, standing and sleeping meditation.
Founder of the Buddhist Center in Zagreb, Croatia, Zarko first encountered Buddhism in 1975 and has been a martial arts and yoga teacher since the 1970s. In 1985, he started the first Buddhist study and meditation group in Croatia, which in time, grew into the first Buddhist community there, now known as the Dharmaloka Chan Buddhist Community.

In 1996, while seeking a new teacher, he met Chan Master Sheng Yen, attended one of his seven-day retreat, and, in the end, became one of his students. Seeing Chan as the very core of the Buddha Dharma and Master Sheng Yen as the man whose teaching stems directly from the meditative experience, he has dedicated himself to the practice of Chan meditation and has attended Master Sheng Yen's retreats regularly. In June 2001, during a two-week retreat in the USA, Zarko received Dharma transmission from Master Sheng Yen, thus becoming one of his five Dharma heirs in the West.

Conference Theme

In recent years, the issues of economic prosperity and well-being, public governance and management, business sustainability, and social justice and harmony, have attracted great attention around the globe. The sustainability of human welfare also hinges upon these areas. We believe that Buddhism can offer us alternative insight to look for ways to solve related problems. In view of this need, Master Sheng Yen, founder of Dharma Drum Mountain, launched the “Protecting the Spiritual Environment” and “Six Ethics of the Mind” campaigns as a lifestyle choice, advocating the ideal of “building a pure land on Earth” to urge people to realize Buddhist teachings in daily life. This can connect and complement contemporary social science studies regarding these issues.

In commemoration of the 10th anniversary of Master Sheng Yen’s passing, the 2019 International Conference on Buddhism and Social Science aims to enhance cross-disciplinary studies between Buddhism and Social Science. The conference will include four tracks: 1. Economics, 2. Public Governance and Management, 3. Finance, Accounting, & Business Administration, and 4. Sociology. Through presentations and panel discussions, the organizer aims to show that Buddhism and the idea of “spiritual environmental protection” can be incorporated into Social Science. Together, they can make a more meaningful contribution to modern-day life, helping us eliminate conflicts of individual interests and create shared benefits for the globe in a sustainable way.
