DDM Gives Warmest Care to Flood Victims in Jakarta
The city of Jakarta has recently experienced its worst flood in five years. The damaging flood was caused by days of heavy rainfall, inundating rivers around the Jakarta area.
From 31 January 2007, Jakarta and its nearby towns were struck by heavy rainfall, causing severe flooding to the city of 14 million. 75% of the city has been affected and casualties have been reported.
Upon receiving the news on 4 February, Dharma Drum Mountain Social Welfare and Charity Foundation initiated its emergency relief operations to the affected areas. To those affected by the flood, the founder of DDM, Venerable Master Sheng Yen, and the Abbot President of DDM, Venerable Guo Dong, extended their good wishes and blessings.
DDM Welfare and Charity Foundation gave its best service available to the victims despite a resource-limited situation in Jakarta. Supplies of bamboo mats, medical aid and other material assistance were delivered to people in flood-affected areas.
In addition to striving to give the victims sufficient material relief, DDM saw the work of providing spiritual counseling to help them maintain peace in mind as crucial to the relief operation. This is done with DDM's goal of "uplifting character of humanity and building a pure land on Earth".
