An anchor, a compass and a lighthouse to help us cross the choppy sea of life.

In a world of great uncertainties and alienation, in a life full of challenges and difficulties, we need an anchor, a compass and a lighthouse to help us cross the choppy sea of life.

The key lies in our mind, in how much we know about our own mind and whether we can be the master of our own mind.

DDM International Meditation Group (IMG) shares with people the why and how of life as taught by Chan Buddhism, through which we can find true peace and wisdom as well as the delight of life and the warmth in the world.

DDM IMG started out when an American lawyer living in Taipei met Master Sheng Yen in 1994 and asked him for a retreat for her and some of her friends.

At that time, she had no idea what she was asking because she had not had a lesson in meditation and did not meditate but wanted to. Thereafter, she arranged for various groups of foreigners to come to the Nung Chan Temple in Beitou for beginners’ lessons and a one-day retreat, which was, eventually, held at the old DDM temple in Jinshan (before any new construction started there).

After that, sometime in 1995, a regular sitting group of foreigners in Taipei was set up, which has continued to meet on a regular basis. The group started holding events and sittings in downtown Taipei and in the annex of Nung Chan Monastery in Beitou with increasing involvement from monastics.

From the beginning of 1995 and all the way to 2018, many foreigners and local practitioners stepped into IMG and participated in weekly group practices, either in a shorter or longer period of time. Many life stories of mindfulness and inner growth from volunteers and practitioners were revealed, little by little, through the sincere sharing sessions.

These sharing also showed what IMG have cultivated for those who have been practicing meditation together and been part of the group.
