What is the best possible way to spend my Labor Day weekend? Is it to head on a road trip with friends, to indulge myself in the sun on the beach, or to max out my credit cards at the shopping mall? These things above, I have done them all. However the happiness that they brought me were short lived; in fact, it disappeared right afterwards. It wasn’t until I started to learn about Chan meditation, that I finally found a way to embrace true happiness. So, that is how I spent my Labor Day weekend this year. Apparently, I was not alone. There were more than twenty people who had attended the 3-day Chan meditation retreat at the Chan Meditation Center in Elmhurst, New York. Our lead teacher Ven. Changzhai had mentioned that she was very encouraged to see us willing to join her to practice Chan meditation. Just like every other retreat, I had gained a lot more things this time as well.

books on Buddhism and all the reading has been helpful. However,

I have considered myself a Buddhist for the past thirty years, but the past two years have taken me into a deeper understanding of Buddhist thought and practice about life. I became acquainted with Master Sheng Yen three years ago when visiting Dharma Drum Mountain Monastery in Taiwan for a day tour.
Sunday February 28 was the most exciting day in the history of Canadian athletics. The last event of the Winter Olympics was taking place. It was the national sport – ice hockey – against the country’s biggest rivals, the USA. Vancouver’s streets were crowded with cheering fans staring up at huge screens fixed to tall buildings.
This was the second time I participated in the Living CH’an Workshop held at the Vancouver Dharma Drum Centre. I learned a great deal when I participated in the workshop last time.

A lotus for you all, Buddha to be.

This is my first Chan retreat with Guo Yuan Fashi. When I welcomed and saw Guo Yuan Fashi coming into the retreat villa "Amitayus", all of a sudden, I felt a very deep impression of Fashi’s strong compassion that radiating from his face.

This is my third Chan Retreat. Before this, I have participated in a retreat with Guo Jun Fashi. Fashi gave me understanding that meditation is a natural process. Although there are many steps in meditation, I think that this entire steps will develop naturally.

This retreat was the third retreat I’d joined. But the first with Guo Yuan Fashi. I’d always enjoyed a retreat although I knew somewhere in the middle of the retreat I might face obstacles, boredom, painful knees …

First of all, I understand that, as always the case, it is not easy to have the opportunity to participate in the retreat and therefore I feel grateful.
Pause for a moment! Just listen to those voices in your head.
… Can you hear them?
Pause for another moment! Just notice the images your mind is playing.
… Can you see them?
Now ask yourself the question: When faced with a new situation, are these voices and images telling me what to do or am “I” deciding what to do?
In a world where stress, strain and rush abound, peace of mind is of paramount significance. It is a treasure that everyone desires, but only few know how to get it and even fewer do something to get it.
