Dharma Drum Mountain Holds a Forum: “Lead a Wonderful Life” to Welcome the Completion of Baoyun Monastery
The construction of DDM Baoyun Monastery will be completed and inaugurated next March in Taichung. Therefore, the Abbot President of DDM, Ven. Guo Dong, the founder of Acer, Stan Shih, and the famous director, Wu Nien-Jen gathered at Taichung City Government on the afternoon of August 17th, 2014, and shared their wisdom of their lives to guide the public learn to live at ease and joyfully
Before the forum starts, Taichung Mayor, Jason Hu, specially stood for the citizens to greet those who were present at the forum and watched the live broadcast through internet or cable. Meanwhile, the organizer also re-presented the details that the late venerable Master Sheng Yen first spread the Dharma in Taichung at the same day 26 years ago through videos. On top of that, Venerable Guo Shyang, who had served as Venerable Master Sheng Yen’s interpreter of Taiwanese, was also invited to the forum as an honored guest.
The director of DDM Taichung Branch Monastery said what promotes the advent of Baoyun Monastery is that the late venerable Master Sheng Yen brought the seeds of Buddha Dharma to Taichung 26 years ago, adding that in the future, Baoyun Monastery will be the center to promote education and care in central Taiwan and today’s forum is just the beginning for greeting the arrival of Baoyun Monastery.
“I didn’t have any ambitions before. After encountering the Buddha dharma, I just have the Bodhi-mind of benefiting all the sentient beings.”, said the Abbot President of DDM, Ven. Guo Dong. After graduating from high school, he joined in the army and then leaved the army. After leaving the army, he ran a business of video tapes and opened a restaurant with friends. Afterwards, both careers closed sequentially, from which, he profoundly felt what is called “impermanence.” Then, friends took him to Nung Chan Monastery to join the seven-day retreat where he realized how to think positively, approach problems from different angles, and feel for people with empathy through the wisdom of Buddha dharma.
“Be a useful person.”, said the founder of Acer, Stan Shih’s mother. Being a singleton of a single parent family and shouldering huge expectations, Stan Shih always bears in mind what her mother said and treats every adversity as an once-in-a-lifetime chance to learn. After retiring from Acer honorably, he established Wangdao Management Program, by which, he hopes to change the industrial and social culture.
“I am in my sixties. I haven’t set any goals until now because the possibility of life is infinite.”, said the well-known director, Wu Nien-Jen. Growing up in Jiufen, famed for its coal mine, he joined the adults’ world very early for helping villagers write letters and read newspapers, from which, he felt that all people of the village were on the same boat; after working in Taipei, he experienced the indifference of people, which made him want to connect people by telling stories. In the process of telling stories, he learned to have an open mind to listen and understand. Even now he remains to think the existence of adversity in his life is very normal so that his attitude towards life is grateful and non-procrustean.
The forum, “Lead a Wonderful Life,” will be held once a month by next February and notables from different fields will sequentially share their magnificent life stories in the following forums.
